Impacted Wisdom Teeth

Evaluation and removal of impacted third molars

Although most people develop 32 permanent adult teeth, many times the jaws are too small to accommodate the four wisdom teeth. When inadequate space prevents the teeth from erupting, they are called impacted wisdom teeth. This indicates their inability to reach the proper position for chewing and cleaning.

How Dr. Loving evaluates your wisdom teeth

We will see you for a consultation to determine whether you will benefit from wisdom tooth removal. A special x-ray of your mouth and jaws (a panorex) is taken to determine whether your wisdom teeth are impacted, whether there is room for them to erupt, and how difficult removal will be. Early evaluation and treatment are recommended, since impacted teeth can cause pain, infection and damage to neighboring teeth.

What to know about impacted wisdom teeth

  • Panoramic imaging to assess impaction
  • Removal before pain, infection or crowding develops
  • IV sedation and nitrous oxide available
  • Protects neighboring teeth from damage
